Frequently asked questions
Is it hard to pass the Australian citizenship test?
Most people pass the Australian citizenship test with proper preparation, because every question comes from the testable section of the official booklet, Our Common Bond. You need 15 of 20 questions correct plus all 5 Australian values questions right, so the values section is where careful study matters most. Taking free practice tests is the easiest way to check you're ready.
How many questions are in the Australian citizenship test?
The Australian citizenship test has 20 multiple-choice questions, all drawn from the testable section of Our Common Bond. Five of the 20 are Australian values questions, and you must answer every one of those correctly to pass.
What are the 5 Australian values?
The "5" refers to the 5 Australian values questions in the citizenship test — all of which must be answered correctly — rather than a fixed list of five values. The values themselves are set out in Our Common Bond and include respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual, freedom of religion and secular government, freedom of speech, equality of all people under the law, parliamentary democracy and the rule of law, equality of opportunity and a "fair go", and mutual respect and tolerance.
What is the pass mark for the Australian citizenship test?
The pass mark is 75% — at least 15 of the 20 questions correct. You must also answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly, so it's possible to score 15 or higher and still not pass if a values question is wrong.
How long is the Australian citizenship test?
You have 45 minutes to answer the 20 questions in the Australian citizenship test. That works out to more than two minutes per question, so most people finish with time to spare.
Can I take the Australian citizenship test in my own language?
No — the Australian citizenship test is a computer-based test taken in English, and it also serves as the assessment of your English ability. You can still study in your own language: many of our practice questions include translation subtitles in multiple languages beneath the English text, so you build understanding without losing English exam practice.
Is this the official Australian citizenship test?
No. CitizenshipPractice is an independent practice tool for the Australian citizenship test and is not affiliated with the Department of Home Affairs or the Australian Government. Book and sit the real test through homeaffairs.gov.au.
Is the citizenship practice test free?
Yes — completely free. There's no signup, no email and no paywall, so you can take unlimited Australian citizenship test practice straight in your browser.
Where do the practice questions come from?
Every question is written from Our Common Bond, the official Department of Home Affairs booklet, and grouped by its five chapters so you always know where to revise. We keep adding to the bank and don't pad it with repeats or trick questions. Since the real test draws just 20 questions from the official material, practising accurate, well-sourced questions matters far more than chasing a big count.
How should I study for the citizenship test?
Work through Our Common Bond, the official Department of Home Affairs booklet, one chapter at a time, then test yourself. Every question here is mapped to its chapter, so a practice test shows exactly which parts of Our Common Bond to revisit. Short, regular sessions beat cramming the night before.
